Edo Govt Begins Property Owners Profiling in New City Development Starting June 3

Benin City, June 2, 2025 — The Edo State Government has announced the commencement of property owners profiling in its proposed New City Development project, with the exercise scheduled to begin on Monday, June 3, 2025.

The profiling exercise is a key step in the state's ambitious urban expansion initiative aimed at developing a modern, sustainable, and well-planned city that will accommodate population growth, boost economic activity, and enhance infrastructure in Edo State.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Physical Planning, Housing, Urban and Regional Development, the profiling process will involve the collection of essential data from existing landowners and occupants within the designated area of the New City. This will include property ownership documents, building details, occupancy status, and other relevant information.

The government emphasized that the exercise is not meant to dispossess anyone of their property but to create a comprehensive database that will guide proper planning, compensation (where necessary), and integration into the master plan of the New City.

"This exercise is crucial to ensuring a fair, inclusive, and transparent development process. We are urging all property owners and residents in the designated area to fully cooperate with the profiling teams," the statement read.

Field officers from the Ministry will be visiting properties within the area starting June 3. Residents are advised to have necessary documents ready and be available to answer any relevant questions.

The New City Development is part of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration's strategy to decongest the Benin City metropolis and drive structured urban development that supports affordable housing, business hubs, and green infrastructure.

The Edo State Government has also assured that all profiling data will be handled with utmost confidentiality and used solely for developmental purposes.
