Federal Government Launches ₦120 Billion TVET Grant to Empower Nigerian Youth

In a significant move to bolster technical and vocational education, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a comprehensive ₦120 billion grant aimed at revitalizing the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. This initiative seeks to equip Nigerian youth with industry-relevant skills, reduce unemployment, and stimulate economic growth.


Key Features of the TVET Grant:

Monthly Stipend: Beneficiaries will receive a non-repayable monthly stipend of ₦45,000 to support their training and livelihood needs. 

Tuition-Free Training: All training programs under the initiative are fully funded by the government, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality technical education.


Skill Certification: Participants will obtain nationally recognized certifications upon completion, enhancing their employability both locally and internationally.


Startup Support: Graduates will have access to take-off grants and business loans at single-digit interest rates to facilitate the establishment of their enterprises. 


Training Programs Offered:

Short-Term Certificate (STC) Programme:

Duration: 6 months

Target Group: First-time trainees, school leavers, or individuals without formal education.

Requirements: Valid National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN). (MSME Africa, Scholars World)

Vocational Education & Innovation (VEI) Programme:


Duration: 1 year

Target Group: Individuals with some education or informal training experience.

Requirements: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), or any non-formal education certificate. (MSME Africa)

Eligibility Criteria:

Nigerian citizenship.


Age between 18 and 35 years.


Enrollment in a recognized technical institution accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).


Compliance with program requirements, including attendance and performance standards.


Possession of a valid BVN and an active bank account. (Trade Test)


Application Process:


Interested individuals can apply through the official TVET portal: https://www.tvet.education.gov.ng/apply/. The application involves creating an account, selecting a preferred program, and submitting necessary documentation.


Government's Vision:


Professor Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), emphasized the government's commitment to reviving technical education. "The ₦45,000 stipend is a grant, not a loan. It’s meant to support and attract more youth into technical education," he stated. (Trade Test)


Furthermore, the Minister of Education is spearheading efforts to establish a National Skills Fund under the Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), ensuring sustainable funding for TVET institutions across both public and private sectors.
